The Silent Lives of Others
I sculpt stoneware ceramic forms of human heads, portraits of people that exist in another time, in another place, gods, and mythical creatures, the silent lives of others. The Somme is part of a war that enveloped the lives of so many, sucking them into a terrifying maelstrom. Their lives now silent. I create sculpture as a means of connecting with men and women to glimpse into specific pasts, frozen moments in time. Many were plucked from their lives and sent to the front: never to return or scarred physically and mentally from their experiences. The damage being passed onto friends, family and offspring, with those left at home also being deeply affected. This will happen again, the cycle of war moves to target new victims in its continuous ebb and flow. The Somme is just as relevant today as ever.
